Integrated Science Holiday Work & Tasks

Dear all boys,

As mentioned during class, please spend the week of September holidays very wisely.

These are the following tasks that I would like you to complete for the week:
1) Go through the 2 sets of Thermal Physics notes. I have attached the teachers' version so that the questions in the 2 handouts will be addressed.
2) Do an online learning on Thermal Physics (if you have not done so)

3) Complete LSS Ex 7 : Thermal Physics
4) Study for LSS Test 4 which I will administer on the 1st week of Term 4. Topics will be on cells, diffusion and osmosis, digestive system, respiratory system & thermal physics. Although the marks to this test will not contribute to any assessment, it will still be a good platform for you to test yourselves.

5) Complete your Science E-porfolio by September 13 (Mon) - Do update your link in the response box below if there are changes to the one that you key in the last time. If you are not sure, just key in the most updated link. Information of the Science E-portfolio is also attached on the EMB.

Note that you have to access the EMB for the various attachments.

Dear boys,

Those who has yet to hand in LSS Ex 6: Diffusion & Osmosis, Digestion, please do so latest by next Monday, 23 August before 0800 hrs or it will be considered late (computed in the deadline of your progress report).

If I do not receive your LSS Ex 6 by 23 August 1400 hrs, the consequence is that your science
test marks will be penalised.

Science Film Review: ACE Opportunity

Dear all,

I will be showing a documentary series from Discovery Channel entitled:

Mysteries of Modern Asia: Psychics, Mystics and Shamans

on 16 August (Mon) 2.20 pm to 3.30 pm at SPACE (iSpark Room)

Afterwhich, you will need to write a page of reflections / thoughts based on what you have watched. That will fulfill part of your ACE for Science. You will then need to do 2 more science enrichments.

I will not be applying for excuse for CCAs, class lessons e.t.c. You have to negotiate with your teacher should you need excuse from these afternoon activities.

Diffusion and Osmosis - Applications

Dear boys,

Good to see all of you guys preparing for the presentations for Diffusion and Osmosis Applications. I have seen through some of your presentations and they are really good, with nice pictures and clear explanations.

I hope the rest have put in effort to prepare to present to the rest of the class. I will be giving time for you guys to prepare the presentation (1I1 has gone to teh computer lab last Mon) in the computer lab. You will be presenting next week (Week 5).

Talking about Week 5, remember that our science test on "Term 2 topics (mainly chemistry) and Cells" will be in Week 7. I will be giving out test instructions and such next week.

There are some of you who have yet to hand in LSS Ex 5 and I am still waiting. I will be putting up a list of boys who have not handed in LSS Ex 5 next week.

Preparing for Week 4...

There are many events happening in Week 4.

Racial Harmony Day - a day of cultural events, food and interactions.
Singapore Quality Award (SQA) - the highest pinnacle award that an organisation can received. The assessors will be coming down to HCI for 3 days, from 19 July - 21 July.

Do remember to prepare for the peer teaching / presentation on "Diffusion and Osmosis Applications". Also, your LSS Ex 5 on Cells is due on Monday 19 July.

Week 3 - Diffusion & Osmosis

Well, after learning about cells, structures and functions, we will go on to the processes that will be happening. We will touch on diffusion and osmosis, a very important concept in science cutting across Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Here, emphasis will be on life processes since the concept of diffusion and osmosis will be linked to Digestive System and Respiratory System taught in the later part of the term. I hope the boys will be able to see the big picture of the topics taught in each term.

I will be giving out LSS Ex 5 on Cells. Please complete the exercise by next Monday 19 July 2010.

On the relaxed note, hope that you have enjoyed the World Cup Finals this morning and again, the Octopus Oracle was right, Spain will win and to conclude, his preduction is amazingly 100% reliable and accurate!!!

Week 1 ended :)

Dear all,

Week 1 has just ended. I have gone through all the housekeeping matters pertaining the rest of the year with you
1) ACE for Term 3
2) Science Exam & Exemptions
3) Science test on 12 Aug (Thurs)
4) Term 4 Enrichment and Science E-portfolio

If you have missed it, please check with your friends again.

This week, I managed to show you some videos on "cells" and the concept of specialisation in a cell / body. Through "micro-trivia" in Cells Discussion 2 worksheet, we also looked at the timeline on the discovery of cells, microscope e.t.c.

Next week, we may touch more on the process of diffusion and osmosis, how these process support our life functions.

Getting ready for Term 3...

Hope you students are ready for Term 3. The focus will be more on Biology and ending off with thermal Physics. Do take a look at the syllabus and Scheme of Work for more detailed information.

At the same time, you are to "beef" up your electronic science portfolio as submission will be called in Term 4 Week 1. Those who have selected Science as one of your ACE for Term 3, the package will be as follows:

1) A critique / review of a science-related film / movie / documentary
2) 2 Science Enrichments (can only worked on opportunities in Term 3 only.

This is it...a new space for my Integrated Science iSpark classes, for both students and parents.
